"Hamburg Passenger Lists, 1850-1934" for Heinrich Friedmann, Line 14, digital image of manifest, Ancestry.com, (http://interactive.ancestry.com : accessed 6 March 2014), ss. Lincoln, Hamburg, Germany to Grimsby, England, on 10 September 1889, citing source: Staatsarchiv Hamburg, Bestand: 373-7 I, VIII (Auswanderungsamt I). Mikrofilmrollen K 1701 - K 2008, S 17363 - S 17383, 13116 - 13183.
The best passenger list that I have found for Heinrich
Friedmann, b. about 1878 was on the ss German
Empire arriving 27 October 1896. In this case, Heinrich Friedmann, male, 18, previously lived in Zemplin, Hungary, previously a “Baker”? same profession as his companions. Not a Landmann (laborer) or an Opera? Like the majority of others on this list. Destination was New York. One person, adult over 10 years old. He was travelling two friends, Franz Kirsch age 24, b. 1872 from Konigshutte, [a city in Silesia in Southern Poland, now called Chrozow] AND with Andreas Thomecky? age 22, b. 1874 also from Kongigshutte, germany.
“Hamburg
Passenger Lists, 1850-1934,”for Heinrich Friedmann, digital image, ancestry.com, (http://interactive.ancestry.com/:
accessed 1 June 2014), manifest, S.S. German Empire, From Hamburg to
America via Liverpool, arriving 27 October 1896, list 350, line 54, Heinrich Friedmann, citing: Staatsarchiv
Hamburg. Hamburg
Passenger Lists, Staatsarchiv Hamburg; Volume: 373-7 I, VIII B 1 Band
110; Seite: 350. NOTE: travelling together were; Heinrich Friedmann, Franz Kirsch
[Kusch], and Andreas Thomecky [Shomecky], [Thornuccky].
He must have taken an indirect route to the New World. Meaning that he stopped along the way and
switched vessels Because the next ship was ss. Umbria. He probably landed
in Hull, England, “emigrants taking an indirect route would be
only taking the Hamburg ship for part of the trip and there would be a transfer
to another shipping line for subsequent sections of the journey. The most common indirect
route was from Hamburg to Hull, England. Emigrants would then take a
train across England to Liverpool, London, Southampton, or another port (most
went to Liverpool) and continue their journey to the New World from there.” [1]Since
he remained with the other two companions on the new vessel, they must have
known one another and been friends or work pals.
And the same voyage, Heinrich Friedmann and company–arrived on the S.S. Umbria
in New York, 7 November 1896 [about a week later].
Heinrich Friedmann, age 18 (b.1878),m, laborer,
from Germany to New York, Protracted Sojourn, from Liverpool England, 1 luggage
[travelling with friend Franz Kirsch age 24, b. 1872, AND with Andreas Thomecky? age 22, b. 1874
both from Kongigshutte].
